Why RSS?

RSS is the for online publication what the telephone system was for verbal communication.  There is no shortage of ways to describe how the telephone has changed the way people live or for that matter has changed the entire world.

The ability to receive news right now from someone far away with eyes on the matter at had was powerful a powerful thing with the introduction of the telephone.  That same power is exponentially multiplied by RSS as someone who is on the scene where news is occurring can now share that information at an astonishing rate via blog syndication utilizing RSS to deliver that news to thousands of other locations and a myriad of desktop and mobile devices.

That news and information can also be sent with photographs and images.  Not to mention that the podcast verbal format of information can be distributed as well.

I would wager that RSS and the subsequent technologies that are built upon it will continue to change our lives in a way that is at least as amazing as the telephone.

Video Podcasts Anyone?

Video Podcasting is coming into it's time.  At least it is the time to get on board while the opportunity is still so young.  The subject was a hot topic during the opening day of SES Chicago.  In true Search Engine Strategies style Danny Sullivan included new topic that the die hard early adopters want to see become the norm.  There were approximately 44 attendees in the session dedicated to video podcasts and a great lineup of Speakers that included Karen Howe of AOL's hot property Singing Fish which is dedicated to audio and video search, Suranga Chandratillake of blinkx and of course Yahoo! and Google have there interest as the usual suspects with their big pushes to index video content online.

While it may not be prime time media is a place where a lot of amateurs are cutting there teeth on for writing producing and distributing there own content.  As Amanda Watlington of Searching for Profit said in a later session "it is the farm club for mainstream media."

Of course the usual questions arise such as how do you monetize this  effort.  Well does it matter.  When you consider the cost of bandwidth it does.  However, companies like blinkx will take care of the cost of the band with for you through their service if you will allow them to advertise around it.  Otherwise you can still take advantage of their services, but at a reasonable cost.

The thing that is so interesting is this is another step toward making the viewing of content available to the users how they want and when they want.  With devices like the video iPod coming out it is a step closer to the mainstream.  While the majority of viewers of online content may still watch it from their PC as opposed to syncing their iPod the point is that they are searching for video content and they want to find relevant content quickly and easily.

Of course the road to making it universal is not easy.  As the session revealed there exist many challenges when it comes to copyrights.  Much of that can be addressed by properly tagging the content with the following:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Performer
  • Artist or Athlete and Team Name
  • Description
  • Copyright Info
  • Dates
  • Publisher

Of course the above suggested list is not exhaustive, but the easier you make it for the search engines that are indexing video the more quickly they can make it "findable."  Don't hesitate to apply your normal SEO techniques to tagging video content.

The trend seams to be that television and the Internet are becoming more intertwined as we go on.  Who knows where the big stars of the future or media successes will come from.  One thing is certain they will be found on the web.

Early Adopters Will Benefit Most

I was blown away when I read Jane DeFoore's report that the Majority of U.S. Internet Users Unfamiliar with Podcasting, RSS Feeds.  How could that be?  Jane was reporting on a study by Pew Internet and  American Life Project that showed the following:

RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, had the lowest recognition among those surveyed. Only 9% said they had a good idea of what the term means, 65% said they were not really sure, and 26% said they had never heard of it. For the uninitiated, RSS is a technology that allows users to pull articles and headlines from news sites and blogs directly into their computers.

Podcasting received similar blank stares. Only 13% of those surveyed said they had a good idea of the term, which refers to audio files that are downloaded from Web sites and played at the convenience of users. A majority -- 64% -- said they were not really sure what the term meant and 23% had never heard of it.

So what should that tell us?  Those of us who are on the cutting edge of these technologies have the opportunity to educate a whole wave of future users.  Technology companies such as Apple with it's iPod and iTunes have fully positioned themselves to mass market the use of these technologies.  With so few people up to speed many new opportunities will be cultivated than we could possibly be aware of right now.

The real potential of RSS and Podcasting is untouched.  No doubt we will see new industries and technologies that springboard off of the success of RSS and Podcasting.  As more users begin using these fantastic concepts there will be a lot more feedback and this synergy will expand the imagination and unlock the potential of the early adopters.  You will be the ones with the understanding of the benefits of what we have and be in the best position to see how to enhance it.

So if you are one of the fortunate few who know the value of what we have don't be afraid to share these great technologies with others.  It will only make it better, or at least more interesting.

There is an old saying that "by teaching you learn twice."   By sharing the  value and benefits of RSS and Podcasting the one who learns the most just might be you.

RSS and Podcasting are ready for PR

While reading the  article Is Wikipidia ripe for PR? by ZDNet's Joe Brockmeier --  Russell Shaw I was inspired not directly by the question is Wikipidia ripe for PR but by the realization that RSS and Podcasting already are.  Companies such as PRWeb and eMediawire use RSS feeds to move thousands of press releases to journalists and other interested parties around the world.  Podcasting has shown very useful by Webmaster Radio in promoting it's public releations interview talk show "Cover Story".

While the traditional forms of Public Relations are still viable and should not be ignored any PR Agency, Publicist or Marketing Officer is missing the mark if they ignore the power of RSS, Podcasting and maybe even the Wikipedia  in the future.

Apple's Jobs Announces iTunes Podcast Support

According to a report at eweek.com iTunes will be a user friendly place for poscasts.  I have wondered on more than one occasion why this was not part of the Mac Tiger OS 10.4 release.  In my opinion it was one of the few things missing from the release.  Glad to see poscast support now.
